Itororo Lodge
Our Atlantic Forest birding tours are based at the beautiful Itororo Lodge, located about 40 minutes from our previous lodge (Serra dos Tucanos Lodge). The grounds at Itororo Lodge have several trails that provide excellent birding, and we also run birdwatching excursions to a variety of Atlantic Forest habitats. You can either visit us independently or by booking on a tour with the many birdwatching tour companies that we cater for.
The lodge
Located just 2.5 hours from Rio de Janeiro and situated in its own private valley surrounded by forest at an altitude of 1,200 m, Itororo Lodge provides the perfect base from which to explore the abundant and unique bird life of the beautiful Serra do Mar mountains.
Lodge trails
There are a total of 4 trails leading from the main lodge, all differing in distance and with an amazing diversity of birds to be found on them. To date we have recorded over 180 species within the lodge grounds, of which over 60 are Atlantic forest endemics!
Birding excursions
We run birdwatching excursions to a variety of habitats in search of the many species of birds found only in the Atlantic Forest, including the Atlantic Forest lowlands, Atlantic Forest mountains, Atlantic Dry Forest, and wetlands.
Location
Itororo Lodge is located approximately 140 km north-east of Rio de Janeiro, situated just 20 minutes drive away from the town of Nova Friburgo. The drive from Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport to the lodge takes 2.5 – 3 hours.
