August birding in the Atlantic Rainforest is one of the best times for bird photography!

If you are looking for cool temperatures, almost zero humidity and very busy bird feeders then August has to be one of the best times to visit the Atlantic Rainforest of south-east Brazil! We have just finished another 8 day tour based at Itororo lodge with the feeders “dripping” with birds, lots of very exciting mixed flocks on the various trails and excursions and the feeders at the Itororo hide (both corn and fruit) have been the most productive we have ever seen them! With daily “top ups” of corn, bananas and papaya, the hide feeders are now regularly visited by the usually difficult to observe Spot-winged Wood Quail, Cryptic (Such’s) Antthrush, Half-collared Sparrow, Brassy-breasted Tanager, Burnished-buff Tanager, Green-winged Saltator, Golden-chevroned Tanager, Ruby-crowned Tanager, Dusky-legged Guan, Maroon-bellied Parakeet and Blue Dacnis.

The Itororo lodge feeders located in front of the lodge are also incredibly busy and currently being visited by Saffron Toucanet, Gilt-edged Tanager, Brassy-breasted Tanager, Burnished-buff Tanager, Ruby-crowned Tanager, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Plain Parakeet, Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Magpie Tanager, Blue Dacnis, Azure-shouldered Tanager, Sayaca Tanager, Rufous-collared Sparrow and hummingbirds including Brazilian Ruby, Violet-capped Woodnymph, White-throated Hummingbird and Scale-throated Hermit.

Mixed flocks have also been plentiful with highlights including Yellow-eared and White-browed Woodpeckers, Scaled Woodcreeper, White-throated Woodcreeper, Planalto Woodcreeper, Tufted Antshrike, Chestnut-headed Tanager, Black-billed Scythebill, Buff-fronted, Buff-browed, White-collared and White-browed Foliage Gleaners!
